We’ve officially entered that liminal phase of Australian seasonal dressing as spring slips into summer. The time when we leave the house in shorts, only to regret it by midday, and then sprint home for a cardigan (or umbrella) before heading out for drinks. It’s humid, then cold, then humid again, and we’re avidly scrolling TikTok and Instagram for summer style update inspiration while wondering what we can wear right now.
Fortunately for us, New York Fashion Week has arrived and brought with it street style looks that are filling our sartorial cups.
The event officially kicks off fashion month (with due respect to Copenhagen, our beloved prelude), New York is buzzing with editors, models, influencers and fashion buyers. And, just like us they’re navigating a seasonally confusing time of year. NYC fashion natives are drifting from late-summer haziness to early-autumnal cool, and they’re doing so masterfully.
In a sea of overstyled celebrities and slick PR moments, the best street style in New York feels effortless. There’s an undone, joyful and functional feel to the trends we’re seeing. They say necessity is the mother of invention, and New Yorkers are tying scarves and sweaters around their waists like belts, instantly upgrading minimalist looks while conveniently preparing them for a sudden temperature change. Slouchy, athletic separates—think soccer shorts and oversized tanks—are being paired with oversized button-ups, courtshoes or ballet flats. And, waists are low, and jeans and skirts are loose and frequently layered.
These off-duty looks feel like the most honest answer to our current style predicament. While the runways might forecast next season, the streets are giving us permission to dress like the temperature might drop ten degrees at any moment, and plan for summer with enthusiasm.
